Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is an internationally recognised independent ship classification society, founded in India in 1975. IRS on 22nd June 2010 has achieved the status of full membership of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), the major international body of classification societies.

The primary aim of IRCLASS is to act as catalyst for the maritime industry to self regulate and to ensure safe ships and clean marine environment.
IRCLASS ensures compliance of the ship with international codes and rules right from the ship design and construction and throughout her operative life, thus assisting ship operators and owners to maintain the asset quality, avoid PSC detention, denial of entry and expensive repairs. IRCLASS also offers technical advisory services for marine as well as offshore installations. 

  • To provide faithful and accurate classification and record of mercantile shipping classed with IRS
  • To establish standards and formulate rules for the construction and maintenance of ships, amphibious installation, marine equipment and industrial and general engineering equipment.
  • To approve designs of, to survey and to issue reports on land installations, machinery, materials and apparatus of all kinds.
  • To aid and develop the merchant marine industry of India
  • To evaluate, assess and certify quality management systems in industries and to carry out pre-registration audits and certification audits for quality management systems.
