Job Description


This position reports to the Richmond Refinery HES Safety Team Lead and is responsible for supporting safe execution of operations and maintenance activities in the field. 

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to: 

  • ensuring regulatory compliance by identifying, communicating, and building compliance plans,
  • tracking and, in some cases, implementing standardized safe work processes within the business units in the Richmond Refinery.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline
  • 5 years minimum Refinery or Petrochemical plant safe work practice experience or equivalent. Experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Must be a TWIC card holder or able to apply and receive a TWIC card. This is required to access certain areas of our facility.

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Certified Safety Professional and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred
  • Skills and experience in Safety Analytics
  • Leadership: Provide safety planning and field oversight for project construction and turnarounds. This involves planning and organizing resources for coverage, development of staff to increase organizational capability, controlling work to manage costs and incidental red hat resources among the contracted companies, and providing leadership to role model behaviors in areas such as stop work authority and other key cornerstones for sustaining an Incident and Injury Free workplace.
  • Interpersonal Skills and Teamwork: Interact with staff union contractors and management to achieve the common goals. Able to communicate and work together to solve problems. Proven ability to effectively communicate (both oral and written) with and influence all levels of business unit employees including senior management. Competency in training, facilitating, and presenting to multi-disciplinary groups.
  • Job Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of both Federal and California OSHA regulations. Technical knowledge of Contractor Safety Permit to Work, Safe Work Practices, Motor or Vehicle Safety, Occupational Hygiene, Fitness for Duty, Incident Investigation and Reporting, Repetitive Stress Injury Prevention and Behavior Based Safety principles and processes. Demonstrated understanding of Loss Investigation techniques, such as 5-Why and TapRoot. Field work auditing experience. Skills or experience in safety analytics is preferred.
  • Health and Safety: Demonstrated ability to provide technical HES consultation to management, engineering and construction personnel as well as contractor personnel on a wide range of HES issues. Demonstrated experience in hands on participation and implementation of HES/OE Management Systems, processes and programs. Lead Field walks and safety audits. Knowledge of Safety in Designs. Demonstrated knowledge of Loss Prevention System or Behavioral Based Safety.
