The Biosecurity and Ecology Specialist is a key role in our QGC team supporting QGC's activities in Queensland. Working closely with other members of the team the Biosecurity and Ecology Specialist will provide technical advice, field assurance and drive improvements for pre-clearance surveys, effective reinstatement and rehabilitation, protected vegetation, offsets and biosecurity risk identification and management in accordance with legislative and QGC requirements, in particular, our ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS).

Some of the key deliverables and responsibilities of this role are:
 

  • Strategically identify risk and communicate this to relevant management throughout the business.
  • Field presence includes site review, contractor management and providing technical expertise through implementation of works, particularly in challenging circumstances, consultative recommendations and building relationships with stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement cost effective and strategic improvements to QGC's environment systems.
  • Inspection / re-inspection of infrastructure for flora, fauna, biosecurity and ecological features (as per above) as required to respond to QGC, contractor and/or landholder queries and objections.
  • Identification of and detailed quantification surveys for Threatened Ecological Communities, Matters of National Environmental Significance Species and other listed Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened flora and fauna (e.g., Philotheca sporadica and Jalmenus eubulus) to support Record of Impact and Permit to Disturb applications.
  • Review of Environmental Management System rehabilitation documents, provide technical advice on final rehabilitation of Environmentally Sensitive Areas.
  • Provide services to assess opportunity, management, procedures, and success potential of native and protected plant and tree species if required.
  • Biosecurity and ecology training / Quality Assurance for Environment Advisors if required.
  • Ecological and site rehabilitation monitoring.
  • Advice in relation to strategic cropping lands, wetlands and other areas of significance or special attention if required.
  • Provide biosecurity and ecological technical advice in relation to construction activities and provide monitoring or inspection services as may be required, from time-to-time.
  • Assist in environmental field audits, when required.
  • Understand current Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation and policies regarding biosecurity, vegetation, fauna management with emphasis on Matters of National Environmental Significance species, habitats, environmental constraints mapping, and offset programs.

Requirements

The candidate we are therefore seeking for this position, will have/be; 
  • Tertiary qualification specifically within the environmental discipline (ecology, environmental science, natural resource management).
  • Senior First Aid Certificate.
  • 'Commercial Operator' Agricultural Chemical Distribution Control License (National Competencies: AHCPMG301A Control Weeds; AHCCHM303A Prepare and apply chemicals; and AHCCHM304A Transport, handle and store chemicals).
  • Experience and skills in the cleaning and inspection of light and heavy vehicles used for resource activities during survey, construction and operation (National Competency AHCBIO201A).
  • Experience and skills in inspecting source and stored materials for the purposes of completing Biosecurity Declaration - Supply of things (National Competency AHCPMG301).
  • Produce high quality, scientific data analyses and reporting and exhibiting attention to detail with all technical and administrative tasks.
Crucial to the success of this role is the ability to work collaboratively and interface with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders based in various locations.
