The Principal Mechanical Engineer performs mechanical verification and validation tasks on component, system and process engineering functions such as developing and managing component and system level requirements such as system well architecture, component designs and concept generation, design documentation, and conducting validation testing. An individual at this level should demonstrate the leadership ability to head small work groups or project teams and have a significant history of developing, commercializing and leading successful projects for the main purpose of maintaining Weatherford's Completion Portfolio. The Principal Mechanical Engineer is very comfortable in an R&D environment as well as in a consultant role when required to represent Weatherford in committees.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform general design duties as assigned by Line Management carrying out such duties as:
Preparation of calculations and design packages for performance of design review.
Attend design reviews or sales meetings for new and existing products if required
Implement modifications to existing products to meet internal or external customer needs.
Development and maintenance of test procedures, carrying out appropriate liaison with the Assembly / Test Technician on testing programmes.
Production and maintenance of engineering drawings for use in the manufacture, assembly and testing of products using CAD systems.
Responsible for checking and/or approval of manufacturing drawings, design calculations, test reports and design layouts.
Development and maintenance of bills of materials within the Product Data Management (PDM) systems to ensure correct manufacture of equipment.
Provide engineering assistance to the Quality Assurance, Manufacturing and Assembly Departments in the NCR process of manufactured, purchased and assembled products and parts.
Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) investigation, where appropriate, in relation to on-going projects.
Prepare and update technical documents to create a high quality technical interface for use by other departments.
Prepare, review and approve test reports, job reports, and investigation reports.
Conduct evaluations and design reviews of new and existing product designs.
Participate in the development of field running procedures.
Provide engineering support to operational staff during field runs, ensuring the highest level of Customer Service Quality is maintained throughout.
Participate in the investigation and review of field and problem job reports.
Analyse the field performance of new Products, maintaining ownership of these products until confirmation that full service functionality has been achieved.
Prepare and review detailed design proposals and engineering cost estimates for development of existing products and technologies.
Identify any opportunities for improvement (OFI) regarding design, planning and manufacturing processes.
Represent the business locally and internationally. Liaise with clients and vendors in the specification of potential New Product developments.
Involvement in the development of skills, competencies and experience for engineering staff.
Assist HR and Management Team on activities related to recruiting, hiring, training of staff, evaluating employee performance, and recommending promotions and disciplinary action of department.
Participate in liaison with clients, where applicable, in conjunction with Product Line personnel, Operations , Supply Chain and Customer Services, etc.
When delegated, acts as "Engineering Supervisor/Manager" in the absence of the Engineering Supervisor/Manager, carrying out all associated duties as determined by that position.
Any other delegated responsibilities as instructed by Line Management within the timeframe specified in a safe and efficient manner to meet business requirements, provided the instruction is reasonable and you are capable and deemed competent to fulfil these.

May be required to travel locally as required to liaise with Manufacturing, Product Line and Operations personnel, as well as vendors / sub-contractors, customers and third party facilities.
May be required to travel locally or internationally to support product development, testing, operational support, and product line engineering effort.
Degree in relevant Engineering field or a related discipline.
Extensive experience as a mechanical design engineer.
Must have previous design experience as Senior Design / Project Engineer level.
Proven innovator with ability to realize and commercialize new products.
Extensive experience in a design or project engineering role and also experience in a project management role, and be fully conversant with ISO9001 / API requirements.
Extensive experience in Oil & Gas related engineering within an oilfield equipment / manufacturing environment.
Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering practices, standards and specifications particularly related to the oil field service industry.
Extensive experience in manufacturing and machine shop environments.
Strong experience of Solid Modeling experience and a mid to high level competency with CAD software.
Extensive experience in designing down-hole tools for the oil and gas industry related to plastic, elastomer, and metal part design and manufacturing.
Project management experience and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Must have demonstrated a good knowledge of rig systems, production/drilling Operations, completion well design, and a full understanding of down-hole hydraulics.
Must have sound knowledge of metallic and elastomer materials technology.
Must have proven technical problem solving ability
Must have an ability to effectively plan, control and take responsibility for own work
Must have knowledge of applicable National and International Design Standards.
Must have good Communication skills, both verbal and written, along with the ability to work in a team environment.
Must be capable of working under own initiative with a minimal reliance on supervision.
Has experience with managing and leading internal resources as well as external contracting design resources.
Excellent interpersonal, communications, planning, organizational and team skills, mentoring training and presentation skills.
BEng or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject
Non-Technical degree with relevant experience will also be considered
Relevant engineering design experience gained in an Oil and Gas industry related to cased and open
hole packers, flow control, hydraulic systems, safety valves and sand control technologies.
Familiar with the intellectual property (IP) process and procedures.
Knowledge of Completion well design related to packers, flow control, and intervention.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using Abaqus or a similar software package.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using Star CCM+ or a similar software package.
