Knowing he could benefit from his father's long-time experience in the lumber and oilfield construction businesses, Ralph made John Raymond McDermott a partner and the company’s namesake.

Expanded the business from its original headquarters in Eastland, Texas, to Luling, Texas, after a boom in oil exploration in the area.

Moved the company to Houston, Texas, with the continuing oil boom.

Provided different services to the oil industry through three McDermott family-owned businesses: J. Ray McDermott & Co., Elmax Construction, and Stall & McDermott.

Hired the company’s first construction crew, a team of six.

Opened a New Orleans, Louisiana, office.

Introduced the first use of floating drilling equipment in low-lying marshlands of Texas and Louisiana.

Purchased J.G. McMullen Dredging Company and established it as the Olsen Dredging Company.

Reorganized the multiple McDermott family business operations into one: J. Ray McDermott & Co., Inc. of Delaware.

Designed and installed the first fixed platform made of steel out-of-sight-of-land, in 20 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico for Superior Oil.

Established a contracting division, which was the major operating segment during the early years.

Acquired assets of Harry F. Allsman Company, McDermott’s joint venture partner for several contracting jobs in the Gulf of Mexico, which provided equipment to meet the new demand for offshore construction.

Commissioned construction of the first vessel designed specifically for offshore work (Derrick Barge 4).

The company’s Oil Division was organized.

Job Description

Job Overview: 

McDermott is searchingfor a Senior Human Resources Manager (Site Operations). The HR manger will beresponsible for administering HR, processes and procedures at a designated projectsite within Texas. The position will support project management atsite, as well as partnering with the home office HR team to support thesuccessful project execution. Upon project completion, the successfulindividual may have the opportunity to transition to another field location orto region headquarters in Houston, Texas.


  • Administers human resources policies and procedures at site location
  • Collects and analyzes HR data, and then makes recommendations to site management
  • Processes paperwork for functional area according to established procedures
  • Prepare internal employee communications regarding compensation, benefits, or company policies
  • Work with site management to ensure positive employee relations
  • Assists in performance appraisal process, salary administration process, transactional processes like transfers, increases, promotions, terminations, changes in insurance coverage due qualifying events, direct deposits, W-4s, administration of various processes due to policy or regulation requirements as necessary
  • Participates in benefits administration to include answering general benefits questions, directing callers to benefits specialists, offering clients access to correct paperwork, following up with benefits specialists to assist in resolving client issues
  • Participates in open enrollment process
  • Researches and resolves payroll inquiries and/or issues
  • Processes personnel action forms and assures proper approvals; disseminates approved forms
  • Coordinates with Recruiters as needed on staffing related matters and follow up with managers.
  • Manage Reduction in Force (RIF) actions
  • Partners with employees and management to communicate various Human Resources policies, procedures, laws, standards and government regulations
  • Participate in regional business line/location specific management meetings
  • Conducts exit interviews, assists managers with disciplinary action documentation and general employee relations issues
  • Provide ad-hoc reporting as needed by business lines
  • Performs all other duties as assigned 
Basic Qualifications: 
  • Minimum 12 years of HR experience, with 6 in a managerial position
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations, perform, research and accurately document findings to support the companys position is required
  • An ability to communicate effectively formally and informally in small and large groups, including making executive level presentations; understanding of organization and facility operations; highly developed business case development and project management
  • PC skills including working knowledge of the Microsoft environment and the ability to access, manipulate, organize and relay information in a meaningful way
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with personal and highly confidential information in a professional manner
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Proven knowledge of  employment laws and best practices
  • Demonstrated experience conducting employment investigations and handling workplace related matters
  • Must have knowledge of employment laws including Title IX, Title VII, ADA, FMLA, and other federal and DC laws/regulations
  • Demonstrated customer orientation and team-based approach
  • Ability to collaborate within the HR department
  • Ability to prioritize work and work independently
  • Must have excellent communication and report writing skills
  • Must be able to use sound judgement 


  • Heavy industry, manufacturing, construction is strongly preferred
  • Employee Relations with investigation experience
  • HR Certifications preferred
  • Advanced degree.
